DAY 020: It’s how we deal with it: we laugh

September 10, 2008 | Wednesday

IT’S EVENING. Earlier today I covered this cell’s back window to block out the light. The window is only a narrow slit that is about 2 1/2 feet in length, and they prefer it not be covered. I wanted to sit and think in peace.

A sergeant came to the door. He advised me that my execution date has been rescheduled for the 19th of November. They must have realized that two men were scheduled for execution on the same day. This rescheduling gives me 12 more days, if indeed my execution date has been moved. Elkie Taylor and I won’t find out how it works out when two men are scheduled to be executed on the same day. I haven’t told him and wonder what he will think or feel. I don’t really want to tell him, but he will  find out.

Scooter called me to talk. He told me that he’s pretty sure they are going to execute him because Hood and Maverick got away and that puts the odds against him. As if the odds are not against him already! Well, he said that he told his brother to “watch ’em” (meaning the state) because they might try to kill him 2 or 3 times, as two have gotten away! He said he told him, “Don’t let em do that! To kill me over and over again!” Morbid humor, I know, but it’s how we deal with it: we laugh.

    Hi, dear Rogelio,

Laugh, like hope, is a gift of God. Some kind of shield, against nasty spirits and gloomy thoughts.
Always with you, morning, midday and evening (and in the inbetween too…)
